Have you ever wanted to kick your own butt? Well I did yesterday when I looked in my microwave. Let's just say I let it go a little between cleanings. I was frankly appalled at how dirty it had gotten. So, not wanting to really work too hard to clean it, I remembered in the back of my mind that baking soda and lemon juice were good cleaners. I poured some water, baking powder (couldn't find any baking soda) and lemon juice in a bowl.
As I went to get a rag, out of the corner of my eye I saw it start to foam up. Uh oh, I thought. I've made a science experiment. I wondered just how far it would foam. It calmed down soon enough and I put it in the microwave to cook for 5 minutes.
I was half expecting to open the microwave then to find it sparkling clean. The foaming baking powder/lemon juice fairies had let me down. It did smell rather nice, though. So lots of elbow grease later, it's clean again. I wonder what else I have neglected to look at. Oh I remember, the basement.

bummer, i was getting excited as i read this..our microwave is quite the messy masterpiece. I wish it wouldve worked for you.
So last week in a spurt of cleaning (nesting?) I cleaned the microwave, but what really got me was the build up underneath the microwave. Our microwave is over the stove and we use the vent fan when we cook on the stove. The grease build up - yuck, gross, disgusting...
Has anyone thought of making a microwave with an inside that is completely coated with teflon? Now that'd be nice!
