This is how it started. Millie started barking wildly at something in the yard. It was a turtle. After many anguished pleas to keep it, we caved. We went to Target to get a proper house for it. Then we got it food and later some fake plants and slate. Well, this turtle was having none of it. It looked miserable. It kept clawing to get out. It also smelled worse than an athlete's socks after a big game. Much worse.
Emily begged us to keep it. But it was getting sick so Jay and I put it back in the bog we think it came from. Feeling bad for the kids, we bought them two hamsters and all their accoutrements while they were at school. The girls came home and were only mildly amused by the hamsters and upset about "Shelly" the turtle. They felt a bit better when we told them that she was happier in the bog.
Well, these new hamsters are dumb as posts. They refuse to go up this one tube to get to their food. The other tubes have been well traversed. Being the worriers that we are, Jay and I kept placing them by their food and putting peanut butter in the tube. Then one bit Em as she put her finger in the cage. Sigh.. Oh and Millie just sits by their cage and whines.
Hopefully they will get used to us and not want to get away whenever we come near them. Does anyone have experience with these critters?

Oh. Hamsters. Mmmmmmmmmmyeah....
We had hamsters when I was growing up. They always escaped their cages when our backs were turned. When we watched them or tried to interact with them, they just cowered. Oh. And they died. I think the longest we had one last was about 2 years. We had several that lasted less than a year, and one that only lasted a few days. That was the last one, BTW.
That's jut my experience, however, YMMV.
I wasn't allowed to have a pet growing up unless you count one goldfish (who committed suicide by jumping out of the bowl). So the girls might not appreciate it now but they are very lucky to have Millie and the hamsters and a part time turtle.
Tom,
Uh oh. This does not sound like it's going to end well. I am terrified of them escaping. I bet your hamsters were hard to catch?
Amy,
So sorry to hear about your fish. But oh my gosh did it make me laugh. It jumped out of the bowl!?
Ha ha aha aahaa . Sorry if that's insensitive. But oh my gosh... ha ahah hahah ahahah. I'm terrible. Snicker, giggle. :)
We had a guppy that jumped out of the bowl! Luckily I found it before it expired, and it lived for several more months (in a tank with a cover - I learned that lesson quick)
I've have no experience with hamsters, but I think Jenny and Eric used to have one(they had something small and furry that would roll around in one of those plastic balls). They might have some good advice.
I only thought fish jumped out of bowls in Dr. Seuss movies! Who knew? :)
When you posted this, the drama was only beginning! :)
